WASHINGTON – Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., charged last week with misusing more than $750,000 in campaign funds, will make his first court appearance Wednesday morning in the nation’s capital, officials said.
Jackson is scheduled to appear in federal court at 9:30 a.m. Chicago time.
His wife, Sandi Jackson, a former Chicago alderman charged with falsifying tax returns for six years, will make her first court appearance at 1:30 p.m. Chicago time Wednesday, the officials said.
Both felony cases are assigned to Judge Robert Wilkins in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Court officials said the Jacksons would appear for plea agreement hearings and arraignments.
Jackson Jr.’s attorneys have said that the former congressman, who is 47 and resigned last November after nearly 17 years in office, will plead guilty to the charges against him: conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud and make false statements.
Prosecutors have said Jackson Jr. faces up to five years in prison. They are seeking a $750,000 judgment against him and the forfeiture of some cashmere and fur items of clothing and an array of memorabilia from celebrities including Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
Lawyers for Sandi Jackson, who is 49, also have said she will plead guilty. Prosecutors say she faces up to three years in prison.
Sentencing for the Jacksons is likely weeks away.
